Studio practices

How our lesson rooms work

The checks our teachers hold and the routines we follow, in plain words.

Staff checks and training

  • Background checks
  • CPR and first aid
  • Mandated reporter training

Safety routines

  • Windows and open doors

Every lesson room has a window in its door, or the door stays open.

  • Parents may sit in

A parent is welcome to sit in on any lesson, and the front room has a bench for waiting.

  • Who may collect a student

We hand a child only to the grown-ups on your pickup list, and we ask for ID from anyone we do not know.

  • When a student is ill

A student with a fever stays home. Tell us by text or a call, and we will arrange a make-up.

Family policies

Photos of your child

We ask your written permission before we share any photo of your child, on this site, in newsletters or on social media, and you can change your answer at any time. We never put a child's name with a photo, and the photos on this site are examples until we replace them with our own.

When to keep your child home

If you or your student is ill, please stay home and let the front desk know by text or a phone call. Singers and wind players, tell your teacher about a cold before the lesson, and we will plan a quieter one.

Closures for weather and holidays

We close for the winter break, a week at Thanksgiving, a week in spring and on public holidays. When snow or ice closes the building, we text families by noon, and your teacher offers a make-up.

Drop-off and pickup

Parents of children under ten walk them to the lesson room and wait in the front room. We hand a child only to the grown-ups on your pickup list, and we ask for ID from anyone we do not know.

Watching class and recitals

A parent may sit in on any lesson, and we ask the parents of the youngest students to stay for the first few. Recitals are open to families and friends: arrive early, silence your phone, and applaud at the end of each piece.

Leaving the program

Please tell us in writing a month before your last lesson, by email or at the front desk. We will settle a term in progress with you in writing.

What to wear and bring

Wear what you can play in. Recital days are concert dress: dark trousers or a skirt and a clean shirt, nothing fancier. Bring your instrument, your music and a pencil to every lesson.

Screens and phones

Phones stay in a pocket or a bag during the lesson. Your teacher may ask to record a passage so you can practice from it at home.
