Questions about lessons
What age can a student start?
Most children start between six and ten, and younger children are welcome to a placement visit. Adults of any age are welcome, and a good number of our students began as adults.
How long is a lesson?
Lessons are 30, 45 or 60 minutes, once a week. Beginners usually start with 30 minutes, and your teacher suggests a length after the placement visit.
Do I need my own instrument?
For piano you need a piano or a full-size keyboard at home. For strings and winds, ask your teacher before you buy or rent, because size and quality matter. We rent some instruments by the month.
How are teachers matched?
At the placement visit we listen, ask what you want to play, and suggest the teacher whose lessons suit you. If it is not the right fit, tell us and we will find another.
What is a placement visit?
A visit of about half an hour. A teacher listens to you play or sing, or starts from nothing if you have never played, and we agree on a first lesson length and time.
Can a parent sit in?
Yes. A parent may sit in on any lesson, and we ask the parents of the youngest students to stay for the first few.
Do students have to play in recitals?
No. Recitals are offered each term, and a student plays when they and their teacher decide a piece is ready.
What happens when a lesson is missed?
Tell us at least 24 hours ahead and your teacher offers a make-up within the term.
Can an adult start from nothing?
Yes. Adult beginners have lessons of their own, taught at the pace you set, and are welcome at recitals and in the theory class.
How does tuition work, and how do I leave?
Tuition follows the length and format of the lesson and your teacher, billed monthly. We ask for a month's written notice when you leave.
